            602.  Students will use a variety of strategies to develop vocabulary.

            612.  Students will apply listening skills for a variety of purposes.

Materials needed:

            -  27 copies of WORDO game boards

            -  Students will need their own markers (27)

            -  Vocabulary sheets from the past few weeks.

Readiness

Anticipatory Set

Ask the students why it might be important for them to know the meaning of the words?  Discuss with the students why it is also important to know the meaning of the word than just knowing the spelling of the word.

Instruction/Assessment

Inform the students that we are going to play a game.  The game is similar to Bingo, except we are using words instead of numbers.  Show them the game board sheet, and explain to them how to fill it out (the fill in words from their vocabulary, but only the words not the definitions, words can only be used once).  Then hand out the game board sheets and have the students fill in their vocabulary words.  Once the students are finished explain the rules of the game.

            Rules of WORDO!

                        For the game board

1.)  Students may not put definitions down.

2.)  Students may not repeat any words.

                        For the game.

The teacher will read off only the definition of the word.  As the teacher is reading the definitions students need to listen closely to see if they have the word on their game board that matches the definition just read.  If so, they may cross off that word.  The teacher may choose to do 4 in a row, blackout, or corners.  A teacher should also check the words on the student's game board to make sure the words were actually called.

If time allows play another game of WORDO!

Independent

Students will be assessed by choosing 6 words and writing those words in separate sentences, using the correct definition.  Students will also be assessed by the end of the week vocabulary quiz.

Multicultural Infusion

The multicultural infusion would be dependent on the words that are used for vocabulary.

Modifications

For students with special need

Before the class begins have WORDO boards already created.

Extensions

Have students pick 3 words and write an autobiography about the word itself.  They can write on the word's origin, how it might be used in daily speech, what it means, etc.  This would be a creative piece.
