No matter how good teaching may be, each student must take the responsibility
for his own education.

Evidence of Student Learning

Please note that I do not rely only on testing for student's final grades.  My main evidence of student learning is by observation.  I observe whether or not my students understand the concepts.  If I feel that the majority of the class does not understand the concept then I need to reteach the subject in another way.  In reading I had 2 students whom seemed not to fully comprehend on-grade level books.  So I did small groups with them in hope to improve their comprehension skills.  Homework also plays a factor in whether or not the students understand the concepts.  For instance, (in reading) I know if a student has completed a book by their final project, which talks about their book.  In math there is a daily assignment to practice the new concept learned.

Within this section is the main test given by the district to ensure students are learning.  I taught the concept that is being tested and then administered the tests (CRTs).  I usually do a pretest before I begin a unit.  I utilize pretesting so that I know where my students are and where they might need extra teaching.  During the unit, as I stated before, I observe my students.  These are the main ways that I can tell the students are learning.

These are premade test from the reading basal.  I did not utilize the basal, but wanted to make sure the students were where they should be academically.

The yellow highlighted ones are students that may need a little extra help.  I worked with them individually to improve their scores.

These are Criterion References Test (CRTs), district wide tests.  Every school in Omaha Public Schools must administer these tests.  An A means advance, a PF means proficient, a PG means progressing, and a B means beginning.  As a class we did an independent novel study (where the students chose their own books and can read at a faster pace.  They complete projects to demonstrate understanding of their books).  We also do small groups, for reading skills, such as inferencing and predicting.  These small skills appear on the CRTs.

These are the math CRTs (Criterion Reference Tests).  Before I started each unit, I gave a pretest.  Sometimes the pretest were written (like the geometry pretest, which is shown above), with the data analysis the pretest was oral, and with the measurement unit, the students worked with partners in a discussion.  As you can see from the pretest, all students improved from my instruction.  Note:  with the Data Analysis test, to get an A (advance) the students had to score a 100% on the test.  Most students scored a 19/20, one away from their goal.  From my reteaching some students achieve their goal of an A.
